84 - A Major Defeat For Right-Wing Ideology: American Public Strongly Supports Government Guarantee Of Health Care For All

Today we're going to talk about the prospects for universal health care in America, in other words, making sure no one lacks health insurance. We'll focus less on the nuts and bolts, and more on the public attitude towards this issue. The conclusion will be, the public is solidly on our progressive side.

I talk a lot on Blast The Right about the moral imperative to reduce human misery, suffering, pain and death, which right-wing policies don't do. In fact, the rule of thumb is, right-wing policies increase human misery, suffering, pain and death.

For a couple of examples, check out my year-end podcast 74, where I review some of the worst things the right-wing did in 2006 as covered by Blast The Right. Included among their gifts to America in 2006 were increased poverty, mining deaths, cancer and lung disease.

As I discussed in podcast 79, George Bush's proposal to improve our health care system, which he still runs around shamelessly promoting, leaves 90% of the problem unsolved.

There are 47 million Americans without health care coverage. By the White House's own admission, George Bush's plan will at most cover about 1 in 10 of them.

How does the public feel about that?

We have some fresh data on this, from a New York Times, CBS News poll. It was conducted February 23-27.
A majority of Americans say the federal government should guarantee health insurance to every American, especially children, and are willing to pay higher taxes to do it, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
Heartening, huh?

What you'll hear in the rest of this podcast will show how the right-wing is truly the loony fringe right, and we supposedly loony left progressives are not so loony after all, but supported by strong majority sentiment.

Please listen to the podcast for the details.

(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. Please don't respond just on the basis of the brief preview above. Thanks!)

Sadly I don't have the time to comment on you podcasts' follies individually. Surfice to say I am a working guy earning under $30,000 a year. I have a wife and a kid and I sincerely hope that you and your liberal friends aren't able to prevent me from feeding them, as you seem intent on doing.

I stumbled across "Blast the Right" by accident and started listening to get a view from the "other side." After listening to a few of your podcasts, I feel vindicated, having confirmed that your side has nothing at all to say beyond the usual dogma-driven lies, distortions and insults.

The perfect world your "revolution" seeks to create has already come and gone. It was ruled by a guy named Stalin. But it is obvious you are as ignoarnt of history as you are of ecconomics, ethics and human nature.

I'll continue listening, but only to be informed of the kind of propoganda your side uses. You certainly have no facts or arguments. I hope other listeners are similarly skeptical.

Not so sadly Mr. Hugo I AM going to respond to YOUR comments individually.

First as a "working guy" (and i bet you work loooong hard hours to make your money) making under $30K per year YOU of all people are getting economically SCREWED by the rich rght wingers you seem to admire so much. Over the last 6 years under your darling GWB and the republican congress the bottom 2/3 of americans income has gone down EVERY year (except one where it stayed the same). As the cost of health insurance increases you and your family have less and less to spend on the rest of your life. SO GET THIS.... IT"S NOT THE LIBERALS TAKING THE FOOD OUT OF YOUR MOUTH .... IT"S YOUR "FRIENDS" THE CONSERVATIVES.

"After listening to a few of your podcasts, I feel vindicated, having confirmed that your side has nothing at all to say beyond the usual dogma-driven lies, distortions and insults."
HMMMM did you really listen???!?!?!? EVERY point jack brings up are backed up by REAL data and actual peer reviewed studies(go check out the links in the data resources section .. if you DARE) not just "dogma-driven lies, distortions and insults"

As to the "revolution" you speak of ruled by Joe Stalin. If you REALLY studied politics , history and economics YOU would KNOW that "uncle joe" was no "liberal" or "progressive" he was a flat out DICTATOR and ran an AUTHORITARIAN state in the old soviet union. That IS NOT what progressives want for america and you KNOW that. PLEASE don't even try and say that progressives want to impose a soviet style oommunist/authoritian state here in the USA because YOU KNOW that old canard is just NOT TRUE. Just labeling us as communists is just the kind of "dogma-driven lies, distortions and insults" you accuse progrecssives of... TRY AGAIN!!!

Finally I DO hope you listen and understand that you have value and that you deserve MORE OF THE AMERICAN DREAM because you work hard and play by the rules and not getting SCREWED by the right and making darn near poverty wages....You have to stand up for YOUR RIGHTS and just not just tacitly let these right wingers let you screw yourself ecomnomicaly with their BS that they are feeding you about the left.

Great podcast - a must listen to
Jack Clark documents the right's wars on the poor, civil liberties, the right of workers to organize at work and obtain a decent working wage and work conditions, and against other countries who refuse to accept American domination. Jack provides all the sources so that you can see for yourself how the right is out to enrich itself at the expense of everyone else. Great job, Jack!

awesome show
Clark always backs up his statements against the right wing with fact and data, which gives him all the more credibility. As conglomerate media controlled by politics clouds the mainstream news media, Jack Clark, along with NPR and Democracy Now! have become my primary news source. Awesome podcast!

In-Depth, Meaty, Hardcore Knowledge
This podcast is not just entertainment, humor, chimp-bashing, or gee-whiz recap of the weeks events. Instead, it hits hard and in-depth on the world economic situation and how right-wing policies impact the poor and less advantaged all over the world. He examines Americas support of the World Bank, IMF,multinational corporations, etc., and connects the dots. This is a podcast for grown-ups. He gives good reasons why the right wing is NOT living up to its precious Bible, without putting down the Bible. As a Jesus-loving Christian and moderate Democrat, I respect this podcast for its subject matter. The grown-up manner of the speaker is just icing on the cake. He IS funny, but hes not trying to be, he just has a deadpan delivery but doesnt have to make jokes to make it interesting. The facts make it interesting and devastating.

A Breath of Fresh Air
Jack Clarks Blast the Right podcast is truly a breath of fresh air when it comes to political commentary. Jack is not like some commentators who simply climb on their soap box and state their own opinions as fact. Instead, Jack welcomes competent challenges to his way of thinking, and with logical analysis and sound research, debunks the lies, distortions, and self-deceptions of the right wing. I strongly recommend Blast the Right for people who seek the truth and care more about the long term health and well-being of the whole citizenry than the short term personal gain advocated by modern conservatives. Listen as Jack carefully shows how the high-sounding "God and country" rhetoric of the right wing is really just a smokescreen for policies that ultimately lead only to the increased misery, suffering, and death of the less fortunate for the particular benefit of the wealthy and the well-connected. And, if you find yourself in agreement, return to Podcast Alley to place your vote! Thanks!
